Travel Guide in Dehradun

Things to Do in Dehradun

Reached Dehradun? The Doon Valley has more going for it than most people expect. Sitting at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, it’s a relaxed, green city that works equally well as a destination in itself and as a base for Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Haridwar. Here’s what’s worth your time.

Top Attractions in Dehradun

Robber’s Cave (Gucchu Pani) (8 km from city centre) A natural cave formation where a stream disappears underground and reappears further inside. You can walk through the shallow water inside the cave and the whole experience takes about an hour. It gets crowded on weekends so go on a weekday morning if you can.

Forest Research Institute (FRI) (5 km from city centre) One of the most architecturally striking buildings in Uttarakhand, built in Greco-Roman style with sprawling botanical gardens around it. The forestry museum inside is genuinely interesting and entry is very affordable. Worth at least two hours.

Mindrolling Monastery (10 km from city centre) A large Tibetan Buddhist monastery with an impressive white stupa, detailed wall murals, and a calm atmosphere that feels completely removed from the city outside. One of the largest Buddhist centres in India and worth visiting even if you have no particular interest in Buddhism.

Tapkeshwar Temple (6 km from city centre) A Shiva temple built inside a natural cave by the Tons river. Water drips naturally onto the Shivalinga from the cave ceiling, which is the origin of the name. The riverside setting makes it feel genuinely peaceful outside of festival periods.

Sahastradhara (14 km from city centre) Known for its sulphur springs and natural waterfalls, this is a popular local escape particularly in summer. The springs are said to have therapeutic properties. Cable car rides are available here with views of the surrounding hills.

Lacchiwala Nature Park (24 km from city centre, on the Haridwar road) A forest picnic spot on the banks of the Song river, maintained by the Forest Department. Popular with families and good for a relaxed half day if you want green surroundings without much effort.

Getting Around Dehradun

The zingbus drop points are at Rispana Chowk near Bharat Petroleum and near the ISBT on the Haridwar Bypass. From there:

  • Autos are the most common way to get around the city and cover most destinations for ₹50 to ₹150
  • Vikrams are shared auto-rickshaws that run on fixed routes across the city and are the cheapest option for longer distances within Dehradun at ₹10 to ₹20 per person
  • App cabs like Ola and Uber are available and useful for getting to places like FRI or Robber’s Cave where negotiating auto fares can be tricky
  • For Mussoorie, shared cabs leave from the Mussoorie Bus Stand near the clock tower and take about 45 minutes to 1 hour for around ₹100 to ₹150 per seat
  • For Rishikesh and Haridwar, buses and shared cabs depart from the main ISBT

Best Time to Visit Dehradun

Summer (March to June)

  • Pleasant temperatures between 20°C and 35°C make this the most popular season
  • All attractions are open and the hills around the city are lush
  • Peak tourist season especially around school holidays so accommodation books up fast

Monsoon (July to September)

  • Heavy rainfall makes the valley very green but landslides on the Mussoorie road are common
  • Outdoor activities get limited and the Tons and Rispana rivers run high
  • Dehradun city itself remains largely unaffected but hillside excursions need planning

Winter (October to February)

  • Cool and often foggy mornings with temperatures dropping to 5°C to 8°C at night
  • The city is quieter, hotels are cheaper, and the Himalayan views on clear days are exceptional
  • Mussoorie gets snow from December onwards which draws weekend visitors from Delhi

Local Food Worth Trying

Dehradun has a few things you should make time for:

  • Kafuli is a slow-cooked spinach and fenugreek curry that’s a Garhwali staple, best eaten with steamed rice or mandua ki roti at a local restaurant rather than a tourist place
  • Bal Mithai is a chocolate-brown fudge coated with white sugar balls, originally from the Kumaon hills and widely available in sweet shops around the Paltan Bazaar area
  • Jhangore ki Kheer is a creamy pudding made from barnyard millet, lightly sweetened and often served during festivals. Local dhabas near the ISBT area sometimes carry it
  • The Astley Hall area near Rajpur Road has a concentration of good cafes and bakeries that have been around for decades, worth a stop if you’re in that part of the city

Practical Tips for This Route

  • The Delhi to Dehradun bus drops at Rispana Chowk or near the ISBT on the Haridwar Bypass, both of which are about 4 to 6 km from the Clock Tower area which is considered the city centre
  • If you’re heading straight to Mussoorie, shared cabs are faster and cheaper than waiting for a bus from the ISBT
  • Download offline maps before leaving Delhi as the route passes through areas with patchy network coverage near Roorkee and Muzaffarnagar
  • Weekend buses from Delhi to Dehradun fill up fast, especially Friday evenings and Sunday nights, so book at least 3 to 4 days ahead during summer and long weekends
  • The Doon Valley gets cold in winter evenings even though Delhi might be relatively mild, so carry a light jacket even if you’re travelling in October or November
